surgery. If the patient’s glaucoma is poorly controlled, the surgeon may elect to address the glaucoma by
combining glaucoma filtering surgery with the cataract surgery.
Cyclodestruction:
In cyclodestruction, the ciliary body, the gland that produces the fluid, is partially
destroyed to decrease the amount of fluid produced in the eye. The decrease in the amount of fluid
production assists in decreasing the intraocular pressure of the patient.
CONCLUSION
Because glaucoma is among the leading causes of blindness in the United States, physicians and allied
health personnel necessarily focus a great deal of attention on fighting this vision-altering disease.
Understanding the definition of glaucoma, the diagnostic testing required, and the various treatment
methods available is critical to helping patients battle the disease and maintain a high quality of life.
